Draft 1996, as a tearful smile

-
--- few weeks ago we learned officially the brutal death of Lorenzen Wright. A surreal and tragic end that brought me back 14 years. The NBA Draft 1996 NBA Draft was the first I've seen ("observe" is a big word for the 11 year old boy I was at that time) and obviously, I have retained a special attachment to each player who made this list for me was when a list of names printed on glossy paper. Lorenzen Wright was part of course, but Allen Iverson and Kobe Bryant. I am fallen, it was a great draft and I'm glad I could follow most of the players that I discovered on this occasion. But this draft is not peculiar only to me, she is also herself. Much more than I would have thought when I posted these players in my mind.

--- It is customary to say that the draft 1996 is the best in the NBA history with that of 1984 (Jordan, Olajuwon, Barkley, Stockton) and 2003 (the Headers three Miami, Carmelo Anthony). In terms of pure talent is indisputable. Perhaps even more than does the other two volumes of talent. But the draft 1996 is much more than that. It is a condensed account of all that the NBA, and specifically, a constant oscillation between the two sides in this league, one sparkling and the other much darker. As if the talent had a price. The NBA Draft 1996 is perhaps the most talented draft of history, it is also one which, more than all, leaves a sad feeling bitter at the back of the retina when looking at every player who composes .

No. 1 Pick for The Philadelphia Sixers : Allen Iverson

Playing back while its size makes it a small player same a leader (1.83 m), Allen Iverson is one of the greatest talents of all time. Too much perhaps. One who liked to say he played every second like it was the last was so convinced that he never dropped the ball when he had in his hands. The only time he reached the finals in 2001, was alone accompanied by only a handful of non-graduate brave and dedicated to the life and death to their captain bloated talent. Beyond this fabulous year, Iverson has never allowed his teams to monopolize the tops of the rankings and league (two seasons over 60% of wins only). Failure to do its strongholds franchises in the NBA, failed to become a true leader, Iverson is even now fail in the completion of his career. Unable to cast in a role other than the omnipotent scorer at the center of his team despite the undeniable decline, unable to do Would that sit on the bench a few minutes, Iverson is currently without a club and no one really knows where it will land while he, one of the greatest players in the history of this Sports are still under the sole.

Pick No. 2 for The Toronto Raptors: Marcus Camby

We're talking about a draft that is placed alongside those who gave Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade in the NBA and the player selected in the second position is that Marcus Camby? Make no mistake, the elongated interior is a super player but it does not select the All-Star Game to his credit. It is now recognized as one of the most impacting defensive players in the league but the Raptors are a young franchise ready to bite into its second season of existence just never could really enjoy and capitalize on it. After two seasons in Ontario, the first feat of arms of John Calipari (then at the University of Massachusetts as the now famous coach was brought to the recognition NCAA) was traded in New York against the solid but aging veteran Charles Oakley. Marcus Camby, No. 2 draft pick, is not and never will a star, just a great role player.

Pick No. 3 for The Vancouver (future Memphis
is) Grizzlies: Shareef Abdur-Rahim

After one year of college, this power forward landed in the NBA to post 18.7 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. He was only 19. During the first seven seasons he spent in the league, it will run at 20.7 pts and 8.3 rebs average. Impressive. However, the first true franchise player the Grizzlies never managed to take off his team or even for all other which he has played: it was not until 2006, ten years after its entry into the league and while his game was already wrecked by injuries he was able to participate for the first time in his career to game play-offs. I think he holds the record for most number of matches played in the NBA without attending the post-season. You said loser? From memory, I do not know any player whose enormous talent is proportional to the number of defeats.

Pick # 4 For the Milwaukee Bucks: Stephon Marbury (transferred Minnesota cons to the 5th choice and a future first round pick)

Do I really have to mention the Marbury case? New York legend, it was also merely one year of college. He landed in the league with a talent as big as Big Apple and athletic and technical qualities far above everybody. Ally in young Kevin Garnett, he could hold the NBA in his hand. But quickly fell into the dark side of force, Starbury has done more harm than good in all the teams who wanted to bet on him. Become a pariah in recent years, he went into exile in China. Marbury Is the mess ultimate? He is definitely in the top 3. Especially when viewed a reminder of what he was capable of doing .

Subliminal Jeff Van Gundy

- Jeff Van Gundy
announced that Miami would win the mythical record 72 victories e t 10 regular-season defeats held by the Bulls of Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman. Overenthusiastic big brother of the coach of Orlando? No, it attempts his luck is everything:

- Hello, Pat? Yeah hello, it's Jeff Van Gundy. You know, your former assistant coach in New York. I wanted to congratulate you for the pretty shot that you passed this summer. Meet James, Wade and Bosh in the same color - colors your - no one had dared dream. Really well done.

Too bad it's a little fishing at the coach anyway. Erick Spoelstra did things not bad for a beginner but it may be a bit kinder to the new ambitions of your franchise, right? Finally, I say this, I say nothing.

What would fit is a coach with some experience that has already evolved into a franchise that supports a certain pressure (as in Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago or I do not know me, New York), which is well known in the circuit and players in particular. You know the kind of guy that people know how people know people who regularly spend on TV.

With your new trident infernal question of attack is adjusted so it would be more of a defensive oriented coach that he should. And then someone who works in the shadows, someone not too charismatic (small, bald and pale complexion, for example) to stay well its role in the service of your three new superstars. What would be great too, it would be to find a coach who knows the coach of Orlando. But not because the big rivalry between Florida and there will be the presence of Dwight Howard, who can cause problems for your team, the Magic will be a tough opponent, no less. If there is a way to get info on a little indiscreet coach and his team, it might help, right? Well then I know I say it like that, because it passes through my head.

Oh by the way, while I think my wife told me that you could come to eat home whenever you want. I just bought a new grill, it is su-per. I never ate better meat grilled in my life. I have time to enjoy the moment. I'm not too motivated to continue my role as a commentator on ESPN next year. It was fun, rewarding, I learned many things about coaching, players, all that, but I think I need a new challenge. And as I have an exit clause in my contract, I'm free as air.

Yeah, free as air. Absolutely, totally, completely free as air. Just as I decide to break my engagement. Suppose that one morning it takes me like that, my bed I pick up the phone and it's good, plus no contractual relationship with ESPN. Free, free, free ...

Well, I think the time limit set by the mailbox should not delay to come to an end so I'll leave. Remember that you come when you want at home. And congratulations again for what you did this summer. You're the best.
